Doubleness: Photography by Chang Chien-Chi

CHINA TOWN

i suppose it's cooler outside the dorm, at the fire escape. i have never seen a picture from such a perspective before, i think it will be really cool to see them on the fire escapes real life.

these chinese labourers, mostly uneducated, undocumented, and unskilled, pay smugglers as much as US$75, 000 to leave their homes to work in china town in new york city. their little leisure time is spent in crowded dorm-like apartments. because of their illegal status, they cannot go home, even for a visit. they can only afford to send money.

Chang began to wonder about the their families, their wives and children -- many of whom the men had not seen since they were born.

wives of the labourers with their children, waiting for their husbands... those who took chinese literature, don't u think it's like the poem 《错误》?

hmm... i sort of miss chinese literature...

THE CHAIN

i was initially bewildered by these pictures. doubleness, yes, relevant, but what exactly is Chang depicting?

these photographs are actually taken at Long Fa Tang temple in southern Taiwan. Long Fa Tang can be perceived as either sanctuary of a prison housing some 700 mental patients. the temple administers neither medications nor treatments. instead, the monks and nuns employ chain chains for therapeutic purposes. a patient in stable condition is linked and locked to one who is considered less sane. day in and out, the more lucid leads the chained duo.

desperate families would see Long Fa Tang as the last resort for the incurable. their methods haven proven successful in treating the mentally ill and they claimed that the temple no longer uses the chain on these patients.

the photographs themselves, however, tell a different story. grotesque and yet deeply human, they speak of misery and of isolation, of the sadness of being abandoned by everyone, and forcibly and intimately bound to a stranger. for as long as both shall live.

is'nt this novel to you? at least to me, it is. meanwhile, observe their expressions.

VOOM PORTRAITS Robert Wilson

'the video portraits can be seen in three ways - portrait, still life and landscape. in constructing these spaces, we see an image which can be though of as a portrait. if we look carefully, this still life is a real life. and in a way, if we think about it and look at them long enough, the mental spaces become mental landscapes.'

profound philosophy of art. i dont understand...
